Whales of Iceland Upclose Experience
Visit Whales of Iceland Exhibit for an hour of family fun! When I first heard about the exhibit I thought that it sounded cheesy but the recommendation came from a trusted tour guide we had used in the past so we decided to try it. The display is located in a warehouse near the waterfront in Reykjavik that has life sized models of each of the whales that can be found around Iceland, and it is very unique! The exhibit must have about 30 whales including dolphins, etc.
Go early for the best photo ops
It was the first exhibit of our day which was great because we were the first people in the exhibit. This allowed us to stroll through at our leisure and take photos without having to wait for people to get out of the way, and this is important as you will want to get back to capture the full size of the whales next to your family.
Lighting and sounds make exhibit emersive
The whales are hung from the ceiling with cables but they are just a few feet off the floor. They also use low blue lighting and underwater sound effects, all of which make you feel like you are floating in the ocean right next to the whales. It is surreal actually and one of my favorite points of interest in Reykjavik.
Whales of Iceland – Get the audio tour
When you first walk into the exhibit you are welcomed by the front desk where you will buy your tickets. They also offer you a guided audio tour which we did and it was good, complete with sounds and interesting facts of each whale. You then walk into the main exhibit area where the whales are located. There is also a concession stand if you want coffee, drinks or snacks.
Once inside you are free to explore at your leisure. You can go at the pace of the audio tour or you can use the iPads located at each whale where key statistics and facts of the whales can be found.
Kids will enjoy play area and VR
There was also a VR experience where you could put on a VR headset and you can swim around a whale and learn interesting facts as well. The exhibit has a play area as well for kids, which is great to keep kids occupied if they want to breeze through and you want to go through at a different pace.
Summary
The Whales of Iceland exhibit is a must see if you want to get up close and learn interesting facts about the whales surrounding Iceland. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds so you can take photos with just your family in them. Allow and hour to go through the entire exhibit. This is a great place for kids and they are easy to watch so minimal supervision is needed.
